What is the Senate, and what does it do?

The Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU) Legislative Senate is the upper house in ASUU’s legislative branch.

The Senate is responsible for representing students by allocating funds to Registered Student Governments (RSGs), reviewing proposed legislation, and overseeing ASUU Executive Branch activities. Senators serve on the University Academic Senate and various University committees, and work on University policy issues that impact students across campuses. Senators are elected each spring by the students of the colleges they represent and serve for a term of one year, from May to April. There are 17 seats in the Senate, each of which represents the University’s different colleges.

Senators additionally chair their colleges’ RSGs, and they serve as the primary student representatives to their colleges’ administrations. Each college has an RSG, which is responsible for advocating for the students of its college, providing college-wide programming, recruiting students to the college, and more.

Registered Student Governments can receive funding by submitting Budget Requests on Campus Connect and sending the request through the ASUU Senate, with the help of a Senator. Please contact the senator for your college if you need help submitting a budget request or legislation idea, or understanding the legislative process. You’ll find their contact info below!

If you need to fill out a funding form, you can do so on the ASUU website, asuu.utah.edu.

The ASUU Senate has one funding cycle approximately every month, whilst classes are in session. Scroll down to “Schedule” to double-check meeting times and deadlines.
